About Triangle Turf
Introduction
First, allow us to say that we've been handicapping at racing ovals for over 30 years. We know our way around the track – both frontside and backside.
We take into consideration the traditional speed, class and pace handicapping factors as well as dozens of other variables including post position, trouble, workouts and track bias. The process is designed to keep one from spending countless hours handicapping at home and allow more time for such valuable activities as paddock and post parade inspection - not to mention odds-board watching.
In addition, we have access to backstretch knowledge. We know many trainers personally and talk to them often. We are also familiar with how their horses perform in the mornings. The final time of an a.m. exercise very often is not a true indication of how the horse worked. For example, if you see a 'bullet' work in the Daily Racing Form, that doesn't necessarily mean it was the best drill at the distance. Other horses may have recorded slower times but did so more effortlessly. We've also studied the success of trainers after a claim and are privy to what they are looking for when outlining a horse's 'game plan'.
Triangle Features
(1) The DAILY HANDICAP OF EACH RACE CARD:
Based on the information outlined above, we offer our top three selections and assign from one (1) to four (4) stars to the top horse, which indicates how strongly we feel about the runner's prospects. For example, one star (
Conversely, four stars (
(2) ARCH'S LONGSHOTS:
This is the most popular feature of the publication. What separates us from other 'sheets' is that we give you nine (9) LONGSHOT plays from each of the four tracks covered and then we state why we think the horse has a chance at a price. In addition, we include the LONGSHOT in our top three selections - unlike other public handicappers who 'cover all bases' by offering three selections and then adding a longshot! Think about it: If those folks think a certain horse can win at good odds, why are they omitting it from their top three picks?
(3) The FIRST TIME STARTER & OVERSEAS HORSE report:
Here Triangle analyzes in depth horses making their first start as well as new faces from other countries. Space permitting, we offer comments on bloodlines, local workouts, running style and jockey/trainer statistics. This feature pertains to all entrants and not just our top three selections.
(4) WORKOUT-READY entrants:
This new feature has gained wide acceptance. Horses listed among our top three selections that are also training sharply receive a (w) next to their name. The (w) designation gives added credence to our belief that the animal will run well today.
